Are My Fish Healthy?

At kingston Aquatics we believe that with most things in life 'Prevention is better then cure. You can do a lot to help your self by adding Tonic Salt to your aquarium which helps prevent the diseases covered in this section, regularly checking the Ph and Nitrite levels, and carrying out water changes such as 10% per week to ten days as we do and 25% every month to 6 weeks. Also, the temperature can play a major factor and should be 75-80 F (24-26C). For ponds replacing evaporated water can help keep temperatures comfortable for your fish.

Swimbladder Infection

The symptoms of this bacterial infection are easy to spot. If a fish is swimming oddly such as swimming on the surface, or very close to, and can't swim down in the water or perhaps on the bottom of the pond and can't get up then this is a clear symptom of swimbladder infection. Fish may also be unable to swim upright and may roll to either side.

To cure this simply buy a swimbladder treatment which can be appied on its own or with Aqualibrium tonic salt. Ask us for more details.

White Spot

Symptoms for this parasite are often rapid gill movement, the fish may flick or rub itself against objects and there will be white spots which look like salt on the skin and tail of the fish.

To cure this you can use any of the following Anti Whitespot, WS3 or Protozin. Ask us for more details.

Internal Bacterias

Abdominal Swelling (Dropsy)

Swollen Eyes (Popeye)

Open Sores (Ulcers)

These are generally easily visible and identifiable whilst other symptoms of internal bacterias can be a hollowed abdomen, listless behaviour, loss of appetite, blood streaks under the skin and the fish may darken from its normal colour.

To cure we can supply an anti-internal bacteria treatment.

Fungus

This is quite common and appears as a white cotton wool rash on the fish on or near or the mouth and also on the body.

To cure this one you can use Anti Fungus, Protozin or Fungus cure.

Finrot

This is also highly visible and appers as the tail or fins being eaten away.

The cure is any of the following, Anti Fungus and Finrot, Mxyazin, Melafix or Finrot cure.

Slime and Velvet

This appears as white or grey patches of slime or a dusting of gold/yellow spots on the fish (velvet).

To cure this we recomend Anti Slime and Velvet or Protozin. Ask for more details on any of thede products.

External Parasite

Symptoms for this parasite are disc or worm-like parasites attached to the skin or fins and maggot-like parasites in the fishes gills. Other symptoms can include flicking and rubbing against objects. rapid gill movement and there may also be red, irritated areas of skin. If in doubt then please feel free to call us.

The cure for this one is Anti Crustacean Parasite treatment or Sterazin.

Hole In the Head

Don't panic! This is not as bad as it sounds though it must be treated. It is most common in fish like Cichlids like Discus and Oscars.

The cure for this is a product called Octozin.
